About the event

On our navigation workshop you will:

  • learn how read the map (and marvel at the detail it shows!) What do all the different symbols and colours represent?

  • understand how to use the map to estimate how long your planned journey will take

  • use map and compass to make decisions and find your way while running

  • learn how to use technology to aid navigation

We start our day in a friendly local café with fantastic food – feel free to come for coffee and your breakfast! Over a relaxed cuppa we will get to know one another and start to unpack navigation, helping you to understand how to read the map and how to plan and follow an enjoyable trail run.

We'll then head out to explore the local trails and start practising. We'll look at following and finding our route, using natural and manmade features to know which direction to go in, how long to continue for, and when to stop. We'll also cover using a compass to make decisions about which direction to take, and how contours can help us.

At the end of our run we’ll be back indoors for a change of clothes and maybe some cake or a late lunch to refuel. Now we'll explore how technology can help you navigate. Although we love to find our way with map and compass, we're also realistic about modern technology, which can help us have a safe and enjoyable run. We'll show you how to plan a route using mapping software and apps, and how to view and follow this on your phone or watch.

This course is for beginner navigators who want to be able to find their way on tracks, trails and paths. You don't need any prior experience of navigation or of trail running to be welcome on and enjoy this course.

What experience do I need?

To enjoy our navigation workshop we ask that you can run 5 to 10k, at any pace. We really mean that – there is no minimum pace. We will spend plenty of time on this day stopping to practise, and figuring out our next move! On Into the Hills events we always move at a pace which is comfortable for the slowest people in the group on the day.

What equipment do I need?

We will provide all maps and compasses required for the day. You just need to bring your running kit and shoes (include a warm layer, as we won't be running continuously). You will also need a waterproof running jacket and a hat and gloves. We recommend carrying some water and a couple of snacks, so a bumbag or running vest to carry these in is helpful.

How do I book?
