About the event

This run is a great choice for anyone who wants to challenge themselves on a bigger day out, but still with the supportive, inclusive Into the Hills vibe. The Lakes is home to some fantastic long-distance trails, which can be walked or run, in one go or broken into stages. This route showcases some of the best of Wainwright's Coast to Coast route (newly designated a National Trail) and the well-loved Cumbria Way, as we journey from Ambleside to Keswick. A bonus is the scenic 555 bus ride to begin the run, which is a treat in its own right!

Whether you're exploring bigger distances and want to do so with guidance and support, would like a training run in great company, or simply fancy a big day out, you are warmly welcome.

(Please note that routes are always finalised on the day subject to weather conditions and participants, and may change if we deem it necessary for safety).

How far will we go, and what experience do I need?

We are likely to cover around 32k, with quite a lot (~1000m) of elevation. Much of the route is on good trails and paths, particularly towards the start and end, while the middle has more rocky, stony sections - anything tricky can be walked.

Because this route is longer than many of our guided runs, we suggest that you have completed around a 20k distance relatively recently, and could run a flat 5k at a comfortable pace in around 37-38 minutes. In common with all our events, though, we'll walk up all the hills, stop for short breaks, and always move at a comfortable pace for the slowest people in the group on the day; on Into the Hills events you will never be left behind, or pressured to move faster than you feel comfortable. Into the Hills events were born for more 'sedately' paced runners, but speedier ones happy with a gentle pace are welcome too.

What equipment do I need?

You will need a waterproof running jacket, a warm layer you are happy to run in, and a hat and gloves. You'll also need some water and plenty of snacks, a bumbag or running vest, and a debit or credit card for the bus. Take a look at our 'trail running kit for beginners' page for our top kit picks, or email us if you have any questions.

Who will be leading the event, and how big is the group?

This guided run will be led by one of the Into the Hills team; you can find out more about us here. All our events have a maximum of six participants.

Is there parking/public transport?

The meeting point for this run is Booths Supermarket, Keswick. Keswick has many pay and display car parks (don't use Booths' car park; it's short-stay only), and is served by the 555 and X4/5 bus routes.

Please note that this run (subject to weather conditions) is linear - the group will catch a bus together with your guide from Keswick to the start of the run in Ambleside. Due to the infrequency of buses, we won't be able to wait for you if you are late, so please allow plenty of time! We're sorry; we can't offer refunds if you miss the bus.

It is also possible to meet the group at the run start in Ambleside, but please note that if you park in Ambleside you'll need to organise your own transport back to your car from Keswick at the end of the run.
