About the event
Join us for a classic Lake District adventure day: a guided fell run from Buttermere to Keswick that’s as much about the journey as the miles. We’ll start the day together with a scenic bus ride via atmospheric Honister Pass to Buttermere, then spend the day running point-to-point over high passes, open ridges, and quiet fells, linking some of the finest scenery in the northern fells. Expect an all-day, unhurried adventure with a supportive, friendly vibe—perfect for runners with a bit of off-road experience who are ready to explore further, soak up big views, and enjoy pushing your limits. Summit-baggers will have the chance to tick off no fewer than six new Wainwrights.
(Please note that routes are always finalised on the day subject to weather conditions and participants, and may change if we deem it necessary for safety).
How far will we go, and what experience do I need?
We are likely to cover around 15-17k, with quite a lot of elevation. The north western fells are popular for their fantastic running surfaces; expect firm ground and minimal bog! There is one short scramble section on this run; it is easy to negotiate with no exposure or edges - your guide will help you if you are at all nervous.
To enjoy this guided run we ask that you can comfortably run continuously for around 90 minutes to two hours, at any pace. We really mean that – there is no required pace. We walk up all the hills, stop for short breaks, and always move at a comfortable pace for the slowest people in the group on the day; on Into the Hills events you will never be left behind, or pressured to move faster than you feel comfortable. Into the Hills events were born for more 'sedately' paced runners, but speedier ones happy with a gentle pace are welcome too.
What is fell running?
Fell running is similar to trail running; both involve running off-road! A typical fell run often involves trickier terrain and more elevation gain than a trail run, and the paths are usually less defined. To enjoy this run the most, we recommend that you have some experience of running off-road, and have some trail or fell shoes. You're welcome to get in touch for a chat if you're keen to join but not certain yet whether this run is right for you.
What equipment do I need?
You will need a waterproof running jacket, a warm layer you are happy to run in, and a hat and gloves. You'll also need some water and plenty of snacks, and a bumbag or running vest. Take a look at our 'trail running kit for beginners' page for our top kit picks, or email us if you have any questions.
Who will be leading the event, and how big is the group?
This guided run will be led by one of the Into the Hills team; you can find out more about us here. All our events have a maximum of six participants.
Is there parking/public transport?
The meeting point for this run is Booths Supermarket, Keswick. Keswick has many pay and display car parks (don't use Booths' car park; it's short-stay only), and is served by the 555 and X4/5 bus routes.
Please note that this run (subject to weather conditions) is linear - the group will catch a bus together from Keswick to the start of the run in Buttermere. Due to the infrequency of buses, we won't be able to wait for you if you are late, so please allow plenty of time! We're sorry; we can't offer refunds if you miss the bus.
