About the event
Take on one of the Lake District’s most iconic mountain rounds with a guided fell run around the Fairfield Horseshoe. This classic loop above Ambleside delivers a full day of high-level running, linking broad ridges, rocky summits, and airy descents with huge views across Windermere and the central fells. We’ll keep a friendly, supportive pace throughout, making it an exciting but achievable adventure for runners with some off-road experience who want to enjoy big mountain terrain in great company.
(Please note that routes are always finalised on the day subject to weather conditions and participants, and may change if we deem it necessary for safety).
How far will we go, and what experience do I need?
We are likely to cover around 18-20k, with quite a lot (~1000m) of elevation. The horseshoe is varied in terrain; some sections are rocky and stony, there's a bit of soggy/boggy ground, and there's some lovely runnable grass!
To enjoy this guided run we ask that you can comfortably run continuously for around two hours, at any pace. We really mean that – there is no required pace. We walk up all the hills, stop for short breaks, and always move at a comfortable pace for the slowest people in the group on the day; on Into the Hills events you will never be left behind, or pressured to move faster than you feel comfortable. Into the Hills events were born for more 'sedately' paced runners, but speedier ones happy with a gentle pace are welcome too.
What is fell running?
Fell running is similar to trail running; both involve running off-road! A typical fell run often involves trickier terrain and more elevation gain than a trail run, and the paths are usually less defined. To enjoy this run the most, we recommend that you have some experience of running off-road, and perhaps have done some hill-walking. You'll need trail or fell shoes. You're welcome to get in touch for a chat if you're keen to join but not certain yet whether this run is right for you.
What equipment do I need?
You will need a waterproof running jacket, a warm layer you are happy to run in, and a hat and gloves. You'll also need some water and plenty of snacks, and a bumbag or running vest. Take a look at our 'trail running kit for beginners' page for our top kit picks, or email us if you have any questions.
Who will be leading the event, and how big is the group?
This guided run will be led by one of the Into the Hills team; you can find out more about us here. All our events have a maximum of six participants.
Is there parking/public transport?
The meeting point for this run is The Climbers Shop, Ambleside. Ambleside has several pay and display car parks , and is served by the 555 bus route.
